Engelmann at the 2026 IWA World Water Congress in Scotland
The international water sector faces major challenges that require new solutions. Outdated infrastructure, water losses, and increasing demands for efficiency and safety in water supply: International experts discussed these issues from October 4 to 8, 2026, at the IWA World Water Congress in Glasgow, Scotland. The congress is one of the most important industry gatherings in the water sector and takes place every two years. In 2026, representatives from water utilities, government, research, and industry gathered at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) . Among them was Engelmann.

Pressure for Reform in the British Water Sector
The water sector in England and Wales is under pressure to reform due to environmental pollution, the need for investment, and a loss of public trust. In 2025, the Independent Water Commission, led by Sir Jon Cunliffe, published Independent Water Commission published a report containing 88 recommendations for a fundamental realignment. These included proposals for regulatory changes, longer-term infrastructure planning, and greater consideration of regional needs. Sir Jon Cunliffe was also among the speakers at the conference. The event also garnered attention thanks to Gillian Martin, who is Scottish Cabinet Minister for Climate Action and Rural Affairs. She delivered the opening address. Overall, the discussions at the event highlighted the importance of technical innovations and digitalization for the water sector. Reducing losses, making supply more efficient, and targeting investments more effectively: To achieve this, operators need reliable and timely data.

We were one of 13 companies at the official German joint booth. The focus was on how smart metering technology helps collect consumption data more reliably and make it more usable. Automated remote meter reading and integration into higher-level systems open up options for simplifying processes and identifying consumption patterns. Benedikt Heid (CSO at Engelmann) also explained these connections in his presentation “Benefits of Smart Metering.” He demonstrated how consumption measurement can evolve from sporadic meter readings to a continuous data source. This leads to more efficient meter reading and billing processes, as well as greater data transparency and early detection of leaks. The goal of Engelmann’s participation was to identify business partners and gain a better understanding of the requirements of British utility companies. The internationally oriented conference provided the ideal platform for this.
